Understanding Tension Headaches
Tension-type headaches are the most common form of headache, yet they are often the most ignored. At New Hill Osteopathy, we believe no one should have to "just live" with persistent discomfort. Here is our neighborly guide to finding relief.
⚠️ Clinical Safety Note
Most headaches are benign, but please consult a GP or visit A&E immediately if you experience:
- A "thunderclap" headache (the worst pain you've ever felt, appearing suddenly).
- A headache following a recent head injury.
- Pain accompanied by a fever, stiff neck, rash, or confusion.
- Changes in vision, speech, or coordination.
Symptoms of Tension Headaches
Patients often describe a tension headache as feeling like a tight band is being squeezed around their head. Key signs include:
- A constant, dull ache (rather than a throbbing sensation).
- Tightness across the forehead, temples, or the back of the head.
- Tenderness in the neck and shoulder muscles.
- Unlike migraines, these usually don't involve visual disturbances or nausea.
Why Do They Happen?
In our Horley clinic, we frequently find that tension headaches aren't caused by one single factor, but a combination of lifestyle pressures:
- Postural Strain: "Tech neck" from looking at screens can fatigue the suboccipital muscles at the base of your skull.
- Stress & Clenching: Emotional stress often leads to a clenched jaw (TMJ tension) or hitched shoulders.
- Fatigue: Lack of quality sleep lowers your pain threshold.
Practical Home Relief
Movement: Gentle neck rotations and chin tucks can help reset your posture. If you work at a desk, set a timer to move every 30 minutes.
Hydration: Dehydration is a primary trigger. Ensure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Heat Therapy: A warm wheat bag placed across the shoulders can help "melt" away the muscular guarding that contributes to head pain.
How Osteopathy Provides Relief
As osteopaths, we look beyond the pain to find the root cause. By improving the mobility of the thoracic spine and relaxing the soft tissues of the neck and jaw, we can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of your headaches.
Our approach is always hands-on and tailored to you, combining gentle manipulation with practical advice for your daily life.
